Our "Older" Boys with Down syndrome

(age 6+)

Considering that Reece is 7 now, it is really hard to think of him as being "older".  Cognitively, he is still very much a 3 year old!  But after an orphan has been sent away to the institution, after they turn about 4, their chances of finding a family decrease exponentially.  These children truly are living on borrowed time.

The little boys on this page all have Down syndrome, and are all still waiting for their families to come find them.  They have been waiting a long time, in various countries, in every corner of the globe :(

Even if you are not in a position to adopt one of these little boys, please share them with others you know and consider making life-saving sponsorship donation to our Older Boys General Grant Fund.  There is a family out there for every single one of these kids....your financial gifts make it possible for them to afford the cost of saving one of these lives.

*** As of March 10, 2010, a $0 grant is available for the next family who adopts a little boy from this page.***

DrewDrew (# 3)

Boy, Born April 8, 2004

Drew seems to be one of the lower functioning children, but may also just be a "victim" of his environment :(( At 3 1/2 years he was not able to walk or really even sit up by himself.
Drew is almost 6 now and should be in kindergarten with his peers!  The wonders of a family, therapy, and proper encouragement and education could mean the difference between LIFE and "existence" for Drew! Won't you be his hope??

Zane

Boy, Born March 2004

This adorable 6 year old boy with Down syndrome was found outside a police station in March of 2008. His age is estimated. He is reported to have adapted will to life at the orphanage and has made many friends. He is very helpful to the teachers and care givers. He is able to take care of his daily needs, and speaks a few words. His caregivers find him to be loving, humorous, very adorable and having a kind heart. This lovable boy needs a family that is experienced with childhood delays and can be strong advocates for him.

Brandon

Boy, Born April 17, 2003

What a handsome, darling little boy!!   This little munchkin was the result of his parents trying for a child for 15 years....what a blessing he is, but how devastated they must have been.  :((

He has been waiting a long time, but has been in the orphanage since he was less than a month old.   He is very active, happy, and relatively high functioning.   Brandon does have a mitral valve defect, but has not required any oxygen or medication for it at all.

Brandon's social worker so badly wants him to have a family, and keeps asking why we haven't found one for him yet.   Hope someone will consider Brandon!

Please give this little one the opportunity to achieve all he is meant to!!

Kolya--region 15
Boy, Born 2000

From his advocates and friends:  " Kolya - very delicate and sensitive child who catches every touch, every word or a smile. He may long to sit next to a nice man and just hold hands, enjoying the warmth.

Kolya - special in every sense of the child. He will never be like other children, but this does not negate his ability to enjoy the outside world and bring joy to others. Kolya helpful, helps nurse to collect clothes, toys, clean room. He said not much and indiscriminately, but to understand it is quite possible. He has a good memory. Kolya knows the names of geometric shapes, animals, plants, likes to listen to reading, to collect and puzzles to bother with the designers. Parents need to appreciate their strength, because they need the support of Kolya throughout life. But instead, they can count on sincere affection and love from a really good and loyal man.
Daniel--region 15
Boy, Born 2001

Daniel (blonde boy in this photo) is just a love bug.  He is so affectionate, and so desires the attentions of others.   All of the children in his orphange adore him and include him.   There are many typical children there as well, and they all include Daniel and love him.

He does seem to have a cleft lip, but it may have been repaired.  We are waiting on his medical information.

From his advocates and friends:  "  Danya - darling of the orphanage. Senior nursing him as a plush toy. The attention of others, sometimes excessive, Danka demolishes fortitude. It can be any number of hands, squeezed, it brings him joy. Daniel stranger, it's like an alien from another planet. Perhaps, for example, be frozen in the middle of the room and gaze for hours in space, while moving his lips, fingers fingering the air, smiling. With whom he has conversations that he sees? It is not clear. The world around Danyu frustrating. If he is forced to return to reality, he may cry, or just sits moping until the dreams do not come back again. "

It is hard to know what is that causes Daniel to separate from other sometimes, but he is so affectionate and friendly, maybe he just needs down time.  Reece is very much like that too.
Maxim--region 15
Boy, Born 2002

Oh, how this little boy melts my heart!  Just look at his smile!  He is very high functioning, and will do very well in a lvoing family environment.  He has been blessed to grow up in a baby house and privately run home for children with special needs, and he has been LOVED.  He has many advocates and volunteers who love him dearly, and have asked us to please help him find a family!

It is possible he has Mosaic Down syndrome.   We are waiting on his full medical records.   But he is very healthy, active, social...just a love!!

From his caregivers and friends:   "Expectant parents need to prepare for Maxim difficulties and learn to accept it for what it is: hooligan, a little jealous, but very good-natured and charming.   Maxim respectable hoodlum, may, for example, to climb into adult shoes (larger size, the merrier) and enthusiastically stomping down the corridor until you catch up.   Loves to joke.    In its immediacy and sunny smile forgiven all hooliganism.   Given his state of health, Maxim has good prospects for further development.   He can not speak, but communicates well with the world through gestures and some of the sounds, knows the names of colors and geometric shapes, animal names, colors, fruits and vegetables, loves to play around with toys, loves being read poems and fairy tales.  Maxim is very housewifely, helps with cleaning.   He needs a home where it will and will love.   And it is impossible not to love.

Sasha  (45)
Boy, Born March 13, 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Sasha is a precious little gift from God.  He is 5 years old, but is not able to do much of anything right now.  He is very much still a baby.  He may have CP as well, but is considered severely delayed.  He does a lot of rocking...in his crib, in his stroller...to keep himself occupied.  He has teeth marks in his tongue from chewing on it from boredom.   We do not know if he truly has autism, or he is just so severely impacted by the CP or other birth trauma that the caregivers can't really do much with him, and he turns to himself to soothe.
Sasha desperately needs a loving family, and experienced, patient family who can celebrate every step of progress as a miracle of God!   I can't wait to see the person he becomes when he has a family to love him and encourage him.  He will surely remain bedridden for life if he is sent away, and he is facing that soon.
Please save Sasha!

George

Boy, Born August 13, 2000

George is a loving, smart little boy who has a good life with his foster family.  Regrettably, they do not feel prepared to care for him permanently and are seeking an adoptive family for him.  He walks, feeds himself, dresses himself, has some speech (2 syllable words) and also uses gestures to communicate.  He is schedule trained to use the toilet. He is happy, sleeps well and has emotional attachments to the foster family. His foster family describes him as very sweet and they are eager to find a permanent home for him.

Alexei  (45)

Boy, Born July 24, 2003

    Bobby

Bobby is described as a kind and helpful boy.  He is healthy and active and a favorite of the institution staff.   When our missionary visited there, Bobby reached out and kissed the hand of the social worker, old fashioned gentleman's style!  What a cutie!
Bobby has so much potential and could really do well in a loving family environment.  He is almost 11 already, and is the oldest of our waiting children.   A family experienced with older children with special needs would be a great fit for Bobby!  Please don't leave him here for the rest of his life!

    Ruslan

    Boy, Born November 12, 2002

ALREADY TRANSFERRED, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Ruslan is a handsome young man who is in desperate need of a family right away.  He has strabismus, and is also a CARRIER of Hepatitis B.  (www.webmd.com)    He is asymptomatic at this time.   We are trying to get more details on his Hep B....he is living in the general population of children, so they don't appear to be very concerned about him transmitting it to other children.   (Typically, children with blood-born viruses such as Hep B and HIV are isolated in special orphanages and never available to be adopted, so we are thinking that maybe he tested positive at birth and hasn't been retested, or he isn't showing any outwards symptoms).

From a nurse in the infectious disease unit in a pediatric hospital:

Hepatitis B is something that children in the USA are routinely vaccinated for. If parents have not received the vaccinations, they can easily go to their physician and receive the series. With these vaccinations transmission is extremely minimal as vaccinated parties can have immunity to Hepatitis B. Titers (simple blood test) can also be drawn after taking the vaccines to make sure immunity has been acquired. Hepatitis B is also treatable with medications and people can also just be carriers of the virus. This health condition is labeled chronic, but with proper medical treatment and simple precautions it is very treatable and the risk of transmission is minimal at most.

Ruslan has already been transferred out to the institution due to his age, but he can still be adopted!!    Please open you heart to little Ruslan....he needs you!

The child is with low movement activity.   He moves around slowly and is clumsy.

Sometimes he exhibits stubbornness, gets angry and doesn't pay attention to an adult if refused something or if preferred by him activity is stopped. He already plays for longer periods of time. He uses the toys according to their purpose. He plays with the other children and they like him. If someone takes away something from him he takes a stand. He participates in group activities. In order to develop better the speech of the child, individual classes are carried out  games of imitation of sounds and phonetic games. The child is included in the project Granny and grandchild.   Musical classes are also carried out and the child tries to pronounce the text of the song.

The child has poor notions of the surrounding world. He can't identify his sex and age; he can't count and doesn't recognize the colors but knows some animals dog, cat, bird. He recognizes some fruits  banana, apple, and quince.   During the leisure time the child is taken out on walks around the village and in the nature. The aim is to master elementary notions of the surrounding world.

The child reproduces movements and gestures, sings by humming children's songs.    His concentration is easily disturbed, his attention is unstable due to which the child lags behind in his cognitive activity. As long as he lags behind and has difficulties with the speech, the child could not be tested for development of the psychical processes.

During his free time the child participates in activities that are interesting for him, in cultural activities for gaining social experience and skills for development of his communicative abilities.

Marek is a very handsome, and very high functioning little boy!   He has light brown hair and brown eyes.   He is already 7 years old, but has been kept at the baby house out of total love and concern for him.   He is a very lucky little boy, but would be even more blessed to have a mommy and daddy to call his own.  Marek should have no problem fitting right into a new kindergarten class!  He is social and friendly and just waiting patiently for his family to come get him.     From his caregivers:   He is very smart and cute.   We really need to find a family for him very fast because it is impossible to keep him in the orphanage longer than until summer. He is in urgent need for a family. He does not deserve a life in the mental institution where he is going to be moved. He has huge potential because even after spending so many years in the orphanage he is very high functioning and smart. Everyone loves him in the orphanage and they really want to see him moved into a loving family instead of the mental institution.

PLEASE give Marek a chance to grow up in a loving family!!!

    From his medical records:

The child socializes well in the group, he adapted very quickly to the daily routine and the conditions in the institution. He is very curious, cheerful and hyperactive child.

He can put his clothes on and take them off on his own. He eats independently but not very cleanly. He drinks water and juices from a cup. He uses a potty when reminded by the personnel. He keeps good personal hygiene. He has preferences to clothes, recognizes his tennis shoes and puts them on.

The child understands everything that is spoken to him and carries out the orders and tasks given verbally. He can?t speak, pronounces sounds which are not understandable for the others. He shows great interest in watching TV, especially commercials, children?s shows and cartoons. He easily establishes a contact with the personnel and with the other children ? he plays with them. He knows his name and answers when called by it. He quickly enters into contact with people, even strangers. He likes to play, teases and laughs. He has preferences to specific people from the personnel and likes to be hugged and caressed.

The child is included in a specialized corrective-educational program in which the children participate in play-therapy, individual work and kinesytherapy.   During classes he shows interest and participates actively in the studies but easily looses the concentration of his attention. He can?t yet read or write but makes attempts to draw (chaotically on the paper). He shows interest to all toys and plays with them. He has favorite toys ? cars, legos, trucks, mosaics, balls and cloth-toys.

The child walks, climbs up stairs, runs. He is very mobile and playful; he likes to walk around the classroom and especially in the yard of the institution. He participates actively in the activities of physical education, plays ball and other motion games with the children. The child participates in the activities during play-therapy and musical therapy.

The child doesn?t have self-esteem and self-control. When strangers appear he establishes contact with them and shows interest by trying to attract their attention. When he is discontented he makes funny faces. He has good spatial and emotional orientation.

The work with the child concentrates on development of speech and concentration of the attention.
