Our "Older" Boys with Down syndrome
(age 6+)
Considering that Reece is 7 now, it is really hard to think of him as being "older". Cognitively, he is still very much a 3 year old! But after an orphan has been sent away to the institution, after they turn about 4, their chances of finding a family decrease exponentially. These children truly are living on borrowed time.
The little boys on this page all have Down syndrome, and are all still waiting for their families to come find them. They have been waiting a long time, in various countries, in every corner of the globe :(
Even if you are not in a position to adopt one of these little boys, please share them with others you know and consider making life-saving sponsorship donation to our Older Boys General Grant Fund. There is a family out there for every single one of these kids....your financial gifts make it possible for them to afford the cost of saving one of these lives.
*** As of March 10, 2010, a $0 grant is available for the next family who adopts a little boy from this page.***

"Gabriels" (# 66)
Boy, Born on April 27th, 2001
LATVIA
Our man Gabriels is ever so handsome, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He is described as calm and kind natured. He loves one-on-one time with adults, and is very loving and affectionate. He does not like sudden changes in the environment around him, but this is typical of children with Down syndrome. He loves to be held and played with and hugged. From his medical records:
The child socializes well in the group, he adapted very quickly to the daily routine and the conditions in the institution. He is very curious, cheerful and hyperactive child.
He can put his clothes on and take them off on his own. He eats independently but not very cleanly. He drinks water and juices from a cup. He uses a potty when reminded by the personnel. He keeps good personal hygiene. He has preferences to clothes, recognizes his tennis shoes and puts them on.
The child understands everything that is spoken to him and carries out the orders and tasks given verbally. He can?t speak, pronounces sounds which are not understandable for the others. He shows great interest in watching TV, especially commercials, children?s shows and cartoons. He easily establishes a contact with the personnel and with the other children ? he plays with them. He knows his name and answers when called by it. He quickly enters into contact with people, even strangers. He likes to play, teases and laughs. He has preferences to specific people from the personnel and likes to be hugged and caressed.
The child is included in a specialized corrective-educational program in which the children participate in play-therapy, individual work and kinesytherapy. During classes he shows interest and participates actively in the studies but easily looses the concentration of his attention. He can?t yet read or write but makes attempts to draw (chaotically on the paper). He shows interest to all toys and plays with them. He has favorite toys ? cars, legos, trucks, mosaics, balls and cloth-toys.
The child walks, climbs up stairs, runs. He is very mobile and playful; he likes to walk around the classroom and especially in the yard of the institution. He participates actively in the activities of physical education, plays ball and other motion games with the children. The child participates in the activities during play-therapy and musical therapy.
The child doesn?t have self-esteem and self-control. When strangers appear he establishes contact with them and shows interest by trying to attract their attention. When he is discontented he makes funny faces. He has good spatial and emotional orientation.
The work with the child concentrates on development of speech and concentration of the attention.
