Adopting from Ukraine is a unique experience from adopting in other countries. Most countries work directly with licensed agencies, and offer referrals of children with complete medical information, photos, and other important information that parents want to know prior to choosing to adopt that child. Ukraine wants you to choose a child from their database once you have been approved and are given an appointment to visit the SDA (State Department of Adoptions) in Kyiv.
There are hundreds of children with Down syndrome in Ukraine who are legally available for adoption. They range in age from 14 months and up. They face institutionalization at the age of 4, so we work very hard to prevent them from having to endure that hardship.
