Armenia is located in Central Asia, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Armenia has an incredible, ancient, Biblical history. It is famous for it's stone churches, as well as the location of Mount Ararat, where it is said that Noah's Ark finally came to rest as the waters began to recede after the Great Flood. It is a beautiful country to visit, and you will have a wonderful opportunity to travel and see the sights while you are waiting for the finalization of your adoption.
Armenia is highly urbanized, with 70 percent of all residents living in cities or towns. The State language, Armenian, is over 2,000 years old with its own alphabet - one of only fourteen in the world. It has a unique 38-letter alphabet that dates from the early 5th century. In addition to Armenian, most Armenians speak Russian. Armenians primarily practice Orthodox Christianity.
Children available are as young as 1 month old. There are MANY infants with Down syndrome available at any given time, so we are excited to have the first listings of these children in February 2007. It is very possible for your child to be as young as 6 months when you finalize your adoption. Armenia does not allow the adoption of multiple unrelated children. Only CHRISTIAN families can adopt children from Armenia, per Armenian law. (Did you know that Armenia was the very first nation to declare Christianity it's official religion? The Republic of Georgia was the 2nd!) One parent travels after dossier submission for about 4 days to file your acceptance papers. You will wait 2-5 months after that for your court date, and then travel for about 21 days (this includes a 15 day wait time) to complete the adoption.
As we await our first referred waiting children with Down syndrome, we invite you to make a donation to our General Grant Fund for Armenia. This will be given to the first committed family to adopt through Reece's Rainbow in Armenia. For more information prior to February, please contact Robin Sizemore at Hopscotch Adoptions.
