The Connected Child

All of us here at Reece's Rainbow are very excited about your hope to adopt a child with Down syndrome or other disability through our ministry.  Adoption is a beautiful gift of life and promise, but it also brings with it many challenges and adjustments on the part of the new parents, existing siblings, extended family, and of course, your new child.

Any family considering the adoption of a child from overseas who has been living in an institutional setting should read the book The Connected Child, by Karyn Purvis.   This is regardless of the age or special need of the child you are hoping to adopt.  This is one of the most enlightening and helpful books you can read ahead of your adoption, even before you officially commit to a particular child, and will prepare you with the truth about what these children have missed in their lives until now.

This is critical reading, not just recommended.    The techniques in this book are also very helpful for your bio children with special needs, and even your typical children too!   It is very well-written in layman's terms, and is easy to understand and follow.   It will help you immensely be proactively prepared to handle the challenges that your new child is sure to bring home with him/her!   The suggestion to read this book is not to scare anyone away from their decision to adopt!  It is meant to help you be prepared, and to help your new child HEAL from the broken-ness of his or her past.   Even the youngest infants need this healing time.
